Things to do in Garland, TX

Around 1850, immigrants began settling in the Peters colony area and two towns popped up, Embry and Duck Creek. A rivalry broke out as the towns began to grow around the Santa Fe Railroad Depot as the two towns argued over where the post office should be. The dispute was settled when visiting congressman Joe Abbot put the Post Office between the two towns. The two towns merged and were incorporated as Garland, Texas in 1887. When you visit Garland, here are some popular stops:

  • Aquatic Recreation – Garland is home to four community pools, the Hawaiian Falls water park, and a major lake so there are plenty of summer activities to enjoy.
  • Downtown Garland – A great place to take a stroll and window shop. The downtown area has charming antique shops and clothing stores, and several great places to grab a bite to eat as you slow down and meander the peaceful streets of historic downtown Garland.
  • Granville Arts Center – Two stately theaters make up the Arts Center, located in the downtown area, where you can take in a live musical or play or listen to amazing orchestra music.
  • Resistol and Stetson Factory Outlet – You can’t go wrong with a fine Stetson Cowboy hat. Resistol is the world’s biggest manufacturer of straw, leather, and cloth hats, making quality hats since 1938.
